Start here

Every independent life
starts somewhere small.

Three honest starting points, depending on where you are right now. Pick the one that sounds most like you, and ignore the rest until you need it.

Path one · If you are still dreaming

Start small, start now

You have followed this way of living from a distance for years, and the gap between the life you want and the one you have feels too wide to cross. It is not. Begin with one system you can manage from where you live today, and let it teach you.

Three first steps

  • Grow something you will eat this month: a tray of microgreens or a single raised bed.
  • Catch some rain: one barrel under one downspout.
  • Preserve one thing: a jar of jam or a crock of sauerkraut.

Path two · If you are making the move

Build in the right order

You have land, or you are close to it. The temptation is to start everything at once. The order matters more than the speed: water first, then food, then the systems that store and power it.

Three first steps

  • Map your water: roof area, rainfall, storage, and what your state allows.
  • Plan the land on paper before you build anything on it.
  • Size your power to measured loads, not to brochures.

Path three · If you are already growing

Go deeper

Your beds produce and your shelves are starting to fill. Now the work is about yield, storage and fewer bills, and the guides you need become more specific.

Three next steps

  • Extend the season with a greenhouse or a pair of cold frames.
  • Add pressure canning and root cellaring to what you already preserve.
  • Close the loop with chickens, worms or bees.
